We recieve this question a lot so hopefuly we can now answer it to the many that are interested.  This is the very reason why we finally have the only Sicilian restaurant in Grand Rapids .  The true difference is simple pheasant food made with love!

In Sicily the diet is strongly based on grains, vegetables, and fish.  Meats and game are available, but often used in very special dishes, not every day ones.  Swordfish and tuna are the fish most frequently eaten.  Sicilian vegetable dishes are usually elaborate preparations, often with many ingredients added to the main vegetable to create complex flavors.  Among the vegetables most stressed are eggplant, zucchini, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli and artichoke.  And after Tuscany, Sicily offers the greatest variety of dishes using beans, especially the ancient Mediterranean ones, fava's, chickpeas and lentils.  Sicilian bread is generally of very high quality because of the wonderful nutty flavor of the famous Sicilian wheat.  Generally the bread is dusted with sesame or fennel seeds.  The island has a wide variety of stuffed pizzas called Schiacciatas.

The ingredients in traditional Sicilian desserts include candied citron, orange and other fruits, almonds, walnuts and pistachios, marzipan, sheep’s milk ricotta, jasmine and orange essence, homemade bread crumbs, eggs and Marsala wine.  The cakes often include ground nuts in the flour, and are often heavier in texture than normal cakes.

The thick Sicilian pizzas sold in the United States have their roots in the sfincione world of Palermo.  Like America “Sicilian pizza,” the sfincione made in Palermo and some of the towns in its environs is thicker than Neopolitan pizza and made with tomato sauce (not fresh tomatoes).  Traditionally it is shaped into a rectangle or square, cooked in a special baking pan with 1 inch sides, and served cut into squares.  Instead of mozzarella, sfincione employs a lightly salted Sicilian sheep’s milk cheese called primosale.  Its other ingredients include anchovies (or sardines) bread crumbs, chunks of aged cheese, onions, oil and oregano.

Enjoy!

We strive to be the best authentic pizza kitchen in Grand Rapids but offer many Sicilian style pasta dishes as well.  Some that you may recognize and some that may interest your taste buds.  Can you remember the last time you went out to eat and left in love with your pasta dish.  How about a staple like spaghetti and meatballs?  Most restaurants carry this dish but who makes it the best?  We grew up eating this in our very own homes and I have to say it is not easy to find.  Well lets say it's easy but not memorable.  I remind you that the reason we put this place on earth is because it was missing.  The part that is missing is the love and passion behind the sauce and the tenderness of the meatballs.  Anyone can open a can and cook noodles but what separates Licari's from everyone else?  I can't really give out the the recipe because this is the true reason but simply put. The fresh approach and fresh ingredients!  So I leave you with a couple of pictures to not only get your taste buds flowing but to also look for us when you crave pasta!  Feel free to leave comments as we can only grow with your help.

Tonight, I Gianni Licari, express my frustrations with a food show I attended today.  It is a local company that has been trying to gain my business shortly after we opened our doors in April 2012.  I have slowly given them a bone here and there but man was the food show an eye opener.  I walked in with high expectations and left with shocking results.  I entered with my wife Lisa Licari looking at a sea of vendors handing out samples left and right.  I was starving not eating breakfast or lunch. We started walking around and noticed a common theme.  Some might not be shocked but I was embarrased.  Almost every vendor had tons of food but none of it was fresh.  It was all bagged up frozen foods.  No shame to opening a bag of soup in front of me and pouring it into a kettle to stay warm.  This is soup!  Oh what about the guy selling his fresh bagged pasta!  Gross.  I was disgusted on how many vendors were pushing the same product but with there name on the bag.  Very proud owners of crap in a bag!  What is hapenning to our economy and do you really know what your eating? Well if your looking for Pizza in Grand Rapids try Licari's.  Why?  I walked out of that show with two samples that interested Lisa and I.  Childrens juice boxes and gum packets to sell behind the bar.  What a shocker!  I can't believe that restaurant owners are buying into this packaged food.  We stayed for some good bread, ice cream and ran into a few Licari fans.  Asked them the same questions and we received the same response.  I understand some of it but the entire food show was a bag of this, fried this and so on.  We are a restaurant of integrity the way mom cooked it at home.  Fresh!  Everything you get at Licari's is made in the morning.  We use the best quality ingredients and put love into our food so that you get the best taste everytime.  A rustic pizza, fresh sauce, natural ingredients, great atmosphere, awesome service, unique cocktails and Pure. Sicily!

Licari's has had several requests for a new menu recently and were glad to say that it is coming soon!  Myself, Lisa and Chef Mike are adding several great appetizers, panetti's, a few pasta's and a few new specialty pizza's.  Most of these new items are foods that you can find in the heart of Sicily and some are just our wonderful creations.  We are hoping that we can have this in our customers hands within the coming weeks.  Stay tuned on our facebook page for more information.  Looking forward to taking care of you in the near future.
